----------

Allie glanced out from a thicket of branches. That was one heck of a storm! Even for a big gator, like herself. Allie was just glad she could go deep in the water, and hide in one of her old gator holes. She wasn't real sure if she ever wanted to come out again. She was really kind of sore, now.

Allie saw some two-leggeds run past. Blinking her big gator eyes, she looked closer. Small two-leggeds! She hadn't seen any of them around for quite some time. Nothing that small, certainly.

She gave a little grumble Hello to them. At their screams she bellowed loudly to whoever was scaring them. Some of the bigger two-leggeds came running towards them. Good, they would protect the little ones.

Then, the bigger ones started screaming, and one picked up a branch to wave it at Allie. Allie was confused. Then then branch hit her, on top of her head. Stunned, she sank back into her swamp, not sure what happened. In her confusion, she bellowed again. The big and little one were all screaming now.

Suddenly, in the midst of all the confusion and noise, Allie heard a loud yell of "quiet! Enough!" She looked back out. Nick was standing there, looking around.

Two-leggeds started poiniting at Allie and saying things like "killer!," and "after them!" The one big one shook his stick at Allie again. The gator retreated further back into the swamp, hiding back behind some washed up shrubs.

With a glare, Nick looked back at the crowd. Allie couldn't hear everything he said, he was talking so low. He grabbed the branch, tossing it into the farther out shrubs. When he looked back at Allie, though, he had a sweet smile on his face. Crouching down, he gently prodded the spot on her head. He nodded to himself and gave the big gator a scratch behind her eyes. Softly he whispered "sorry, Allie. They are only here for a bit, then things will hopefully get back to normal." A little louder, so his voice would carry to the others, he stated "no one will allow the children out alone again, and certainly *only* children and grown ups who know you will be allowed this close to the swamp."

Allie floated closer to the edge of the water. Looking up at Nick, she sighed and laid her heavy head down. Now she understood, these strange people were afraid of her! Her! Allie! Sitting down next to her, Nick put his arm around her, snuggling against her. Allie felt better right away. She always did when her Clan Leader showed his confidence in her.

With a happy sigh, Allie waddled back to her swamp. Sliding into the water, she twitched her tail....just so...and gave a gator grin when she heard the shrieking of the two-leggeds when they got splashed, and reveled in Nick's laughter at her antics.
